PROGRESS

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Nelson Mandela.

IN UGANDA

REPORTS ON STUDENT PROGRESS come from Rotarian Joe Mutajjululwa. He volunteers as Project Administrator.  The Uganda committee chooses students, recommending them to the Calgary Committee.

Oversight of the finances, student progress reports, advising on funds available, and overall project reporting is carried out by Rotarian David Bromwich.  He works closely with Joe M to ensure there is mutual clarity of intention.

CHOOSING EDUCATIONAL DIRECTION

Interests and aptitudes of the student must be assessed.  After that, arrangements are made with Universities, Colleges and Trade Schools to accept them.   All the committee members who referred the students help in assessing them for appropriate institutions.

MEANWHILE BACK HOME

As well as the normal issues that face advanced students, these students also have the issues associated with being from very poor families. They may take charge of a family, with parents having died from AIDS or  other serious issues of health and mental health.

EMPLOYMENT THAT IS APPROPRIATE  – NOT JUST A JOB

Once they graduate the question becomes – work.  The student must take action to find or create work.  But Rotarians, who are their mentors, advise and counsel them, and sometimes directly assist a graduate to get work.  Thus, their unemployment is brief.
